Bred Heifers

Here at Neidig Farms Cattle Co. we are very tuff on our heifers. We believe them to be the back bone of any cattle operation. "You can't have a good calf without a good cow and you can't have a good cow without starting with a good heifer."

We do not believe in fat heifers. These heifers are run on summer pasture and then put on stalks. We supplement the heifers with either a protein cake or a liquid feed. When they get heavier with calf we will start supplementing them with some dry matter. Usually we grind a cornstalk and hay mixture for them, mostly corn stalks to start. As the heifers start calving we will start increasing the hay and the quality of the hay.

We also believe that a heifer that has a good first time calving experience will stay in the herd longer and be much more profitable. We are very careful at selecting the bulls we use on our heifers, calving ease is a must.

This year we ran our Gonsior/NF Scarlet Dreams bull that is leased to Accelerated Genetics. This bull was selected for calving ease with a good growth number and his carcass traits. This will be the second year Scarlet has covered our heifers and after seeing his calves last year we were wishing we would've AI'd more cows to him.

Typically our bred heifers all have Preg-Guard 9 prior to breeding and they get Virashield 5 , VL5, and poured with Dectomax at preg checking. We try hard to hand feed our calves and feel this makes a big impact on their dispositions. If you come to visit you will agree that the disposition of our cattle is very pleasant.
